Bequests
A bequest is a common and simple way to leave a planned gift to Food Bank of Iowa through your estate plan or will. There are several ways to leave a bequest:

  • Specific Bequest: Designate the amount of money or specific asset (property, securities, etc.) you wish to give.
  • Percentage Bequest: Designate the percentage of your estate you wish to be given to Food Bank of Iowa.
  • Residuary Bequest: Instruct that any remaining part of your estate be given to Food Bank of Iowa after distributions are made to family and loved ones.
  • Contingent Bequest: Instruct that Food Bank of Iowa receive assets in the event that a beneficiary in your will is no longer living.

Here is some sample bequest language:
“I give and bequeath the sum of $ (or % of my estate) to Food Bank of Iowa to be used in support of its general philanthropic purposes.”

Endow Iowa Fund
Contributing to Food Bank of Iowa’s Endow Iowa Fund allows you to make a gift to the future of Iowa while receiving a generous 25 percent state tax credit. Our Endow Iowa Fund is housed at the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation. Learn more about the Endow Iowa Fund.

Individual Retirement Accounts
Your retirement plan can help Food Bank of Iowa fight hunger. Transfer up to $100,000 from your individual retirement account without being subject to federal income taxes on that distribution. When these transfers support our Endow Iowa Fund, they may also be eligible for the Endow Iowa tax credit mentioned above. Taking advantage of the IRA charitable rollover option provides a simple, tax-wise opportunity to make a gift to Food Bank of Iowa.

Life Insurance
You may also feed hungry people well into the future by naming Food Bank of Iowa as a beneficiary of any individual or group life insurance policy. You will receive an estate tax deduction for insurance proceeds that go to Food Bank of Iowa upon your death.
