Mobile Pantry Program
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, we have temporarily switched all of our mobile pantries to a “drive-thru” distribution. We will ask that people being served remain in their vehicles and unlock their trunk or backseat so our volunteers can safely place a prepackaged food box or bag there. If you are not in a vehicle, you can simply walk through the distribution line while practicing social distancing.
We serve all kinds of communities, from our state’s largest metropolitan area to quiet farm towns. People struggling with hunger live in every type of community, and it’s our job at the Food Bank of Iowa to make sure they have the food they need to thrive. Our Mobile Pantry Program is designed to provide a flexible food assistance resource in locations that don’t have access to traditional resources
How does it work? At each mobile pantry distribution, one of our trucks delivers a customized load of food—produce, meat, bread and non-perishable items are common—to the prearranged mobile pantry site. Local volunteers set up a distribution system that looks much like a farmers market, distributing food to families and individuals in need throughout the scheduled time. When the food is gone, volunteers reset the space to its original condition.
Benefits of a mobile pantry distribution include its flexibility, convenience and timing. A small group of volunteers can easily handle a monthly, bimonthly or quarterly distribution, and no permanent space is needed. A mobile pantry can also serve as a great location for other resources like rental assistance or job training.
Food Bank of Iowa programs and partners adhere to all USDA nondiscrimination guidelines. Learn more.
