We serve all kinds of communities, from our state’s largest metropolitan area to quiet farm towns. People struggling with hunger live in every type of community, and it’s our job at the Food Bank of Iowa to make sure they have the food they need to thrive. Our Mobile Pantry Program is designed to provide a flexible food assistance resource in locations that don’t have access to traditional resources.

How does it work? At each mobile pantry distribution, one of our trucks delivers a customized load of food—produce, meat, bread and non-perishable items are common—to the prearranged mobile pantry site. Local volunteers set up a distribution system that looks much like a farmers market, distributing food to families and individuals in need throughout the scheduled time. When the food is gone, volunteers reset the space to its original condition.

Benefits of a mobile pantry distribution include its flexibility, convenience and timing. A small group of volunteers can easily handle a monthly, bimonthly or quarterly distribution, and no permanent space is needed. All food distributed through our mobile pantries is entirely free. A mobile pantry can also serve as a great location for other resources like rental assistance or job training to share information.

Become a Mobile Pantry Partner by reaching out to the Regional Partnership Coordinator who serves your county. They’ll get you started on the road to a mobile pantry.
