Staff Spotlight: Sandra McReynolds

September 15, 2018 | Newsletter

Since officially joining Food Bank of Iowa in January, our Ottumwa distribution center’s staff has proved itself small but mighty. With just seven employees, the Ottumwa branch has overcome challenge after challenge. One of the keys to their success is Sandra McReynolds, operations coordinator.

Sandra first came to food banking with the Ottumwa branch’s predecessor, Food Bank of Southern Iowa. What started as a part-time job has become a calling for Sandra, who fell in love with the work of feeding Iowans in need.

“It’s not just my job; it’s a mission we all work together to achieve,” Sandra said. “We bring a bit of hope to people who find themselves in hopeless situations.”

That mission focus has helped Sandra overcome the challenges of merging two organizations and bringing processes and procedures up to speed. These hurdles included the implementation of an all-new inventory and ordering system at the distribution center, teaching every partner agency how to use it, updating delivery routes and schedules, and dozens of smaller tweaks. Together, they’ve made for a more effective food bank.

“We now have increased product selection, lower fees, more no-cost items, a more standardized delivery schedule with no delivery fee, retail pickup partnerships, and greater agency support,” Sandra said. “I love being an advocate for our partners and doing my best to make their jobs easier!”
