A Note From Our CEO

March 15, 2018 | Newsletter

Dear Friends,

When I joined the Food Bank of Iowa team just over two years ago, I told my team members that my job was a simple one: remove any barriers to our organization’s success. With a team of dedicated hunger fighters and the largest network of partner agencies in the state, I knew that we could fly. Boy, have we!

In 2017, we reached important milestones on our journey. Our first 1 million lb. distribution month led off the year, followed that spring by the beginning of our renovation project and the Fighting Hunger, Feeding Hope campaign. Late this fall, we began another major step: the merger of Food Bank of Iowa and Food Bank of Southern Iowa. With these achievements propelling us forward, I am sure that 2018 will be a landmark year for Food Bank of Iowa!

As I write this, our brand new, greatly enlarged freezer is being brought down to temperatures around -10 degrees. As we begin to fill it with frozen meat, fruits, vegetables, and more, our construction partners will begin work on a new cooler and expanded dry storage capacity in the back room of our warehouse. Our construction partners estimate that we will complete the whole renovation this summer, but we are already reaping the rewards. Our new food pantry, Karen’s Cupboard, and our clean room are getting up to speed, helping provide more food (and better food) to our neighbors in need. These projects would not have been possible without the renovation.

In January, our family grew as our partners in Ottumwa became, well, us! The staff and partners of the former Food Bank of Southern Iowa are now part of Food Bank of Iowa. We have already heard kind words from our new partner agencies, who have benefited from the greater quantity and variety of food that Food Bank of Iowa is able to provide. We have much work ahead of us as we bring those partners onto our online ordering system and ensure that both facilities are in sync, but we have had a great start. I hope you’ll join me in welcoming our Ottumwa team members and partners to the Food Bank of Iowa family!

I am excited to see where 2018 takes us. We are well on the way to meeting our goals, and we couldn’t have done it without your support. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: when we work together, we do more. Thank you for your partnership in this most worthy effort!

Sincerely,

Michelle Book
