Volunteer Spotlight: Colette

March 15, 2021 | Media Center, Volunteer Spotlight

Meet our volunteer, Colette! She has been volunteering at Food Bank of Iowa for several years, helping every Wednesday in our Volunteer Center, as well as assisting staff with office filing. Family means a lot to this soon-to-be grandma. Colette and her family began volunteering when her son was young – to teach him that “not everyone has what they need and there are ways they can help.”

  • Tell us a little about yourself.
    • I am married and our son and his wife are expecting our first grandchild in July. We like to travel, jog, bike, stay in touch with family, cheer on the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Iowa State Cyclones.  I also enjoy volunteering at our church.
  • How do you volunteer with Food Bank of Iowa (what are your roles/duties)?
    • Every other week I get to do some office filing at The Food Bank and every Wednesday I get to help in the Volunteer Center with whatever project Teddy and David have for us. When possible, I help at mobile pantries.
  • Why did you choose to volunteer with Food Bank of Iowa?
    • The Bible teaches us we were created to be in community and help each other. My husband and I decided to volunteer several places when our son was young so he would see that not everyone has everything they need and there are ways we can help.  Also, I despise the inequalities in this world and my heart hurts to think of kids going hungry, so I have continued to volunteer and love being part of the team at The Food Bank that helps our community.
  • What makes volunteering with Food Bank of Iowa a meaningful use of your time?
    • Over the years I have witnessed the amazing staff and volunteers, the large operation here with all its moving parts, and the great mission of The Food Bank of Iowa. Knowing that many are needing food right here in our own city and state, I am encouraged because there are many with big hearts and lots of energy working to meet that need.
  • What do you wish other people knew about Food Bank of Iowa?
    • The Food Bank has many COVID protections in place, are super organized so your time and effort are put to good use when you volunteer, and they are providing many healthy foods to those who need it in Iowa. You can sign up online when it is convenient for you or your family – shifts are 2 or 2 ½ hours in length.  Volunteering here is easy, meaningful, and rewarding.  I hope if you haven’t yet, you will give it a try.
