Food Bank of Iowa Continues to Step Up to Meet Growing Need

Prairie Meadows is proud to sponsor Food Bank of Iowa’s food distribution

Last Friday, Food Bank of Iowa served 4,941 Iowans through their mobile food distribution at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. More than 60% of those individuals were first-time visitors of a Food Bank of Iowa distribution.

With positive cases of COVID-19 rising rapidly, unemployment is again on the climb and many families have children home again from school.  More individuals are finding themselves in trying financial situations. Unfortunately, food insecurity is expected to climb steadily throughout the remainder of 2020.

Food Bank of Iowa distributed 61,172 pounds of fresh produce, chicken, and other pantry staples during the distribution on November 6. Volunteers manned a safe, socially distant distribution system where food was placed directly in the cars of visitors.

Many people at the food distribution expressed worries about the tough choices they are forced to make between buying food and paying for medical bills, rent, and transportation.

“With COVID on the rise, being hungry and afraid going into the holidays is a triple whammy, we simply need to do more,” said Michelle Book, CEO of Food Bank of Iowa. “That’s why we are proud to partner with Prairie Meadows.”

Prairie Meadows’ sponsorship of the mega-mobile distributions this fall helps Food Bank of Iowa fight food insecurity in Central Iowa by providing additional nutritious food to a growing number of families struggling to make ends meet.

“We at Prairie Meadows are grateful to the Food Bank of Iowa for providing food to the most vulnerable central Iowans with their drive-thru perishable food program,” said Gary Palmer, President/CEO of Prairie Meadows. “It is wonderful to see our donation dollars at work in the community, helping so many as we approach the holidays.”
