Action Alert!
June 18, 2014

With the House of Representatives likely to vote soon on several charitable giving provisions, including legislation championed by Feeding America to improve food donation tax incentives, Independent Sector has launched a national sign on letter to support three charitable tax incentives.  They are asking nonprofit organizations to join them in signing the letter and urging partners to do the same.

Feeding America is actively working with Independent Sector to promote the letter and urges the network to sign and to ask agencies to sign as well. As the food donation legislation included will have a significant impact on our food donation efforts with many companies—especially with produce growers—this is a great opportunity to weigh in on legislation impacting the network.

More information from the Independent Sector alert is included below.

Independent Sector Action Alert:
Please help support the permanent reinstatement of three critical charitable giving incentives by joining Independent Sector and other organizations in taking immediate action.

A vote is imminent in the House on legislation that would permanently reinstate the IRA charitable rollover provision, along with enhanced deductions for donations of food inventory and land conservation easements. It is imperative that we weigh in now and communicate the importance of these provisions to increasing charitable giving and supporting the vital work of charities in our communities.

Sign a Letter to the House of Representatives - Join us in signing a letter to the House of Representatives urging lawmakers to vote for these key charitable provisions.  Our collective voice will be amplified by having the signatures of as many organizations as possible, so please forward this request to your affiliated organizations and networks, so that our lawmakers understand the importance of this issue to the nonprofit sector.

October 18, 2013

A dollar can go along way. College, unemployment or an unexpected change in your life situation can mean learning to live off the dollar store. These are times when a major cut in spending is required as you plan how to survive from week to week. We found that it's possible to take care of the essentials, with a dollop of comfort thrown in, for less than $50 a week by shopping at the local dollar store. Click here for meal ideas, a sample shopping list and more information.

New Partner Agency Orientation

Sept. 12, 2013

We are excited to announce our first new partner agency orientation class,
September 26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Food Bank of Iowa offices in Des Moines.  This class will be held on a quarterly basis to coincide with our new agency application process.  In the near future, there will be a page under the Partner Agency tab where you can find information about the orientation and the schedule for the year. Attendance at this orientation is mandatory for all new agencies as of July 1, 2013.

The orientation will include an introduction to the Food Bank of Iowa and our network of partner agencies, what it is to be a partner agency, making your order and storing product, the billing & reporting process and will include a tour of the Food Bank including the order pick up and produce shopping areas and a live action training on the online ordering and reporting system.

2013 Agency Conferences
Thank you so much to the 61 agencies who were able to send one or more representatives to participate in the first annual Food Bank of Iowa agency conferences held in Des Moines in April and Mason City in May.  As we go forward with these conferences we will only have one site and date that will rotate around our 55 county service area.  Next year’s conference will be held along the same time frame – late April, early May – and will be held in Ames.  We will let you know as soon as we have a confirmed date so you can plan accordingly!

For those of you who were not able to join us, we wanted to share a portion of the information shared with attendees. Click here to take a look at the PowerPoint presentation.  It outlines who Feeding America is and how we work together, some of the statistical studies that Feeding America has completed, and changes we are making at the Food Bank of Iowa.  There is important information in this presentation that could directly impact your agency, we ask you to please make some time to view it.  After viewing the presentation, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in contact with our partner agency coordinator, Kelly Atkins at
