What We Do

The Food Bank of Iowa maintains a 53,000 square foot distribution center in Des Moines containing more than 45,000 square feet of dry storage, 48,000 cubic feet of freezer space and substantial cooler space. Out of this facility, we serve 285 partner agencies in 42 counties. An additional 13 counties are served through our redistribution organization, the Food Bank of Southern Iowa.

The Flow of Food

Donated products are received from all sectors of the food industry, including: growers; packers; processors; manufacturers; wholesalers; brokers and retailers. We also receive food from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). We sort the food and store it in our warehouse.

Partner agencies like food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters place orders based on what we have in inventory. Warehouse staff prep the orders for pickup or deliver them to common sites throughout the state. Food Bank staff also place orders for distribution through direct service programs like mobile pantries and school pantries.

Hungry Iowans receive food from partner agencies and direct service programs.
